FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Bond was set at $1 million Wednesday for Parise Larry, the 14-year-old suspect in a murder Sunday at a Fond du Lac cookout.
Larry turned himself in overnight, police said. Officials are still looking for 17-year-old Antonio Johnston in the murder of Tatyanna Zech, 20.
In Wisconsin, those ages 10 and older charged with most homicide counts are charged in adult court. All 17-year-olds are charged in adult court.
The shooting happened Sunday in a parking lot outside the Maplewood Commons apartment complex on the city’s south side.
In court Wednesday, District Attorney Eric Toney said the shooting happened as Larry and Johnston opened fire at those having a cookout Sunday night.
Zech was shot in the head and killed, and three others were injured.
The complaint says the conflict started when Johnston exchanged words with the man on the complex grounds.
Following that exchange, the complaint says the man began walking toward Johnston. That’s when Johnston is seen on security camera footage pulling out a pistol and firing multiple rounds toward the man.
Police say Larry was also firing shots towards the man.
Security cameras captured Zech falling to the ground, and everyone else running away.
The complaint goes on to say the supposed target was running away when he turned and fired at least one shot back towards Johnston. At some point, he was also injured.
Fond du Lac police tell us it’s possible the victim could face charges as well.
The investigation determined at least 10 shots were fired, including several stray bullets that entered at least one apartment.
Inside that apartment, investigators say a sleeping 49-year-old man was shot.
Police say he remains hospitalized in stable condition.
His 18-year-old son, who was also in the apartment, was grazed by a bullet.
Toney requested a $2-to-$5 million cash bond and acknowledged Larry does not have a criminal history.
“The state believes a significant cash bond at this time is necessary — and based on the charges, the nature of the offenses, the risk of flight and need to protect witnesses,” said Toney.
Defense attorney John Holevoet argued a cash bond wasn’t necessary.
Larry has “learning challenges and intellectual disabilities,” Holevoet said. He grew up in Fond du Lac and his family lives there. Holevoet also noted Larry turned himself him.
“Nonetheless, this is a heightened offense, risk of flight remains present,” said Judge Douglas Edlestein. “I do find the cash bond is necessary to secure future court appearances.”
Edelstein noted the seriousness of the offense and risk of flight in setting the bond at $1 million cash.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 25.
Larry faces eight counts, including being party to first-degree intentional homicide, attempted first-degree intentional homicide and four counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.
Each could face life plus more than 200 years in prison.
Johnston faces eight counts, including first-degree intentional homicide and attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
