GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new employment event was held to help bridge the education-to-career gap in Green Bay.
A local university is doing its part for the future of the workforce.
“This is not a job fair, it’s a unique spin on recruitment,” said Jess Lambrecht, the Executive of Continuing Education at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay.
UW- Green Bay held its ‘Learning While Earning Expo’ for members of the community and local students on Wednesday.
“This generation of high school graduates in particular, have a greater concern about financial indebtedness so, going to college if they have to take out loans is not a great idea for them,” added Lambrecht.
Attendees are connected to organizations that will help them with employment opportunities, benefits, education, and tuition.
Sarah Greely, a Prevea Health talent acquisition specialist, says the healthcare company is looking forward to making new connections: “We believe that our employees don’t want to come into work if their needs aren’t met so we need to meet those needs.”
According to the Society of Human Resource Management, less than 50 percent of employees know about their educational benefits at their companies. Employers are aiming to decrease those rates by using recruitment fairs like the one behind me.
The event also featured various breakout sessions that explored a range of employment options and interests.
Katherine Mcadaragh is a future UWGB student. She says she hopes to find a job opportunity that helps her with tuition, she adds, “I wouldn’t have to worry about student loans because that is a big kibosh to things in life. It can really affect your future.”
The ‘Learning While Earning Expo’ aims to create opportunities for community members to meet their career goals.
“It’ll give me a jump start to what I want to do. Maybe one of these jobs could be something I love to do in the future and start excelling in,” said Mcadaragh.
UWGB plans to expand this education-benefit-focused event to its other area campuses.
