FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A 23-year-old man from Oconto was taken into protective custody after calling police, saying he was walking the streets with a pistol.
The Fond du Lac Police Department responded to the intersection of Marquette Street and E. Merrill Avenue after receiving reports of an armed man around 3:15 p.m.
FDLPD officers found the man walking in the middle of the street, still talking with the Fond du Lac County Communication Center.
The police say officers tried to speak with him, but he yelled obscenities at them and told them to shoot him several times. The man refused to remove his hand from his front sweatshirt pocket.
Still telling officers to shoot him, the man walked into an open parking lot. He then turned away from the police, walking toward E. Rees Street, in the direction of a nearby school where students were still there.
Officers say they used “less than lethal impact munitions.”
Through negotiations and several attempts to reason with the man, he was taken into protective custody. After evaluation, he was placed in emergency detention.
