DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Empty space on De Pere’s south side, near I-41, will soon be filled with houses and apartments.
The more than $100 million development, done by Atkins Development, will be located on the Humana property near the Humana building near Scheuring Road, off of Lawrence Drive.
Construction on The Bungalows of De Pere has already begun.
“The initial streets start construction next week, and we’re told by the City of De Pere they will be completed by July,” says President of Atkins Development, Steve Atkins.
The Bungalows, will include 90 houses on the property at a pace of 25 homes a year.
The cost of each home could range from $600,000-$700,000.
“Some people might allude to this as a 55 plus community now while we are not limited to those 55 and older, the amenities appeal to that demographic,” says Atkins.
Some of those amenities include a community clubhouse for events, a heated pool and fireplace, as well as a fitness center and pickleball.
Atkins says he’s hoping the amenities will be built in the fall, and ready for next spring.
Apartments will also be on the property, but not right away.
“You’re probably looking at mid to late 2024, or even early 2025,” says Atkins.
The units will be high-end and marketed towards muti-family.
The building does not have renderings, or a name yet.
“These are going to be a high end product with underground parking, pool, clubhouse, workout facility,” says Atkins.
There could be as many as 400 apartments, with rent expected to start at $1,000 per month.
The City of De Pere’s Development Services Director Daniel Lindstrom, expressed the need for more housing in the city.
“We are in a housing crunch I guess you could say in a variety of price points…so adding more units to the housing market will help relieve some of the pressure it definitely won’t relieve all the pressure.”
Lindstrom says it also gives existing residents an opportunity to work through the housing cycle.
“It potentially opens up individuals in De Pere to locate to that region and then it frees up existing homes in De Pere for other people to either come up to De Pere or move through the De Pere housing cycle.”
Atkins says his company has already received lots of interest in the homes.
