MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The long-awaited opening of the Racine Street Bridge is set for next week.
The city of Menasha has set a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the bridge at 5:30 p.m. April 19. Attendees will be able to walk across the new bridge, with the first vehicles crossing around 6:30 p.m.
The bridge was originally supposed to open last fall. Instead, only the roundabouts at the ends of the bridge opened. The opening of the bridge itself was delayed three times, with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation blaming parts delivery delays, and then bad weather.
The bridge connects downtown Menasha with Doty Island across the Fox River.
Construction to replace the previous 68-year-old bridge began in 2020. The $33 million project includes 11-foot-wide traffic lanes, five-foot-wide bike lanes, six-foot-wide sidewalks and an auxiliary boat navigation channel with greater clearance to allow more boats under the bridge without lifting it. Plans also call for riverwalks and overlooks on both shores.
