APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) — April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Appleton Police Department is continually working towards ensuring the safety of youth in the community.
Law enforcement is encouraging parents and the community to educate themselves on protective factors, which promote the well-being of children.
“Nurturing and attachment, knowledge of development for kids, and just having that resilience in parents,” were some examples given by Lieutenant Meghan Cash from the Appleton Police Department. “Parenting can be very difficult, so know who you can reach out to.”
Additionally, Appleton’s Crisis Intervention Team officers undergo training in assessments for adverse childhood experiences. The assessment is to help get an idea of somebody’s level of trauma they’ve experienced, so law enforcement can connect them with appropriate resources to get them help.
