APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Danika Viasana was sentenced Thursday to two years, four months in prison for a series of identity theft and drug charges.
Viasana previously pleaded no contest to nine counts of identity theft, three drug-related counts, carrying a concealed weapon, and three bail jumpings. She was also placed on extended supervision for three years, and then another three years on probation by Judge Carrie Schneider. Restitution has not been determined.
Viasana, 33, was already facing charges in Outagamie, and Calumet counties when investigators issued a warning in March that mail was being stolen from mailboxes, and warned the information could be used in identity theft and fraud cases. A few days later, two people were arrested in a traffic stop, and police found about 500 pieces of mail from more than 200 homes and businesses. Deputies then searched a hotel room in Kimberly where Viasana and a man were living, and found more stolen mail. No charges have been filed in Outagamie County in connection with the March 2022 evidence.
Viasana apologized, noting her life spiraled out of control after her brother’s death but she has been making steps to put her life together.
“The amount of remorse, embarrassment, and failure I feel is indescribable. And I’ve felt these feelings long before I was arrested one year ago. I understand I destroyed innocent bystanders’ peace of mind and highly inconvenienced their lives and wasted their time. I understand the full impact it’s had on their lives, and I wish with everything that I am that I could take it all back. I was a self-destructive twister. It’s no fault of theirs at all; they got caught in my path,” she said.
Viasana also has a May 15 trial date in Calumet County on 38 counts, including nine of mail theft, misappropriating identification information, and wire fraud.
Charges may still be filed for the mail recovered in March, but to this point, have not been.
