GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The debate of reproductive rights in Wisconsin has made its way into the Green Bay mayor’s race.
Mayor Eric Genrich is reminding voters he’s pro-choice.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision in June to overturn Roe v. Wade, Wisconsin reinstated an 1849 law banning abortions.
Genrich told supporters during a campaign event Wednesday that while local officials don’t have the ability to overturn the federal ruling and state law, he still believes women should have the right to make their own decision when it comes to their reproductive rights.
“When I ran for State Assembly, I was proud to be receive the support of Planned Parenthood every time I ran because I understood this is an issue of ultimate importance for women in this community and across this state,” said Genrich. “I think it’s really important for the voters to have a clear understanding where the candidates stand.”
His opponent, Chad Weininger, says abortion rights don’t belong in what is supposed to be a non-partisan local election. He promised that if elected, he’ll tackle city issues to improve quality of life for residents.
“At the end of the day, we need a mayor who is going to lead the city forward, take care of the issues that we have to as a community — which is fix our roads, create strong economic opportunities for all families and not tax people out of their home and create safer neighborhoods,” said Weininger. “And he’s failed on that for the last four years, and he’s trying to deflect from that record with these state and federal issues.”
Abortion has taken the center stage in another spring election: Wisconsin’s state supreme court race.
