GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Bay is investing some of its American Rescue Plan Act dollars into increasing the number of qualified childcare professionals in the area.
Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich presented a check for $100,000 to Brown County United Way and Family & Childcare Resources of Northeast Wisconsin.
The funds will support unregulated childcare providers in Green Bay by helping them become regulated. The money is particularly focused on supporting culturally responsive providers.
The funds will be used for renovations, background checks, license application costs, equipment and more. The city says these factors can prevent unregulated groups and home-based providers from becoming regulated.
The pandemic caused Green Bay to lose nearly 600 regulated childcare slots, according to the city.
“Lack of access to affordable, high quality childcare is an issue for families and employers in Green Bay and around the country,” said Genrich.
Brown County United Way’s Advocacy Council has identified childcare equity as a top priority. Last year, it invested $50,000 in increasing culturally diverse childcare options in the community.
