The Barbasol Horizon League men’s and women’s basketball tournament begins Tuesday night as the conference announced it’s post-season awards on Monday.
Kevin Borseth has been named the Women’s Coach of the Year for the 8th time at Green Bay. Borseth led the Phoenix to the undisputed regular season championship and his squad will take a 24-6 record into the conference tournament later this week. Sydney Levy from Appleton North High School was named to the first team All Horizon League squad. Bailey Butler, last year’s Freshman of the Year, was named to the second team and was also picked for the All Defensive team.
The Milwaukee Panthers were represented as well with Megan Walstad named to the All Defensive team and Kammy Peppler from Hortonville, earned a spot of the All Freshman team. Milwaukee will be in action Tuesday night as the number 7 seed, hosting 10th seeded Robert Morris. The GB Phoenix have a bye and will host the lowest surviving seed from the opening round on Thursday night at the Kress Center.
Destiny Leo of Cleveland State was named the women’s Player of the Year.
Honors on the men’s side included Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis being named the Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Davis leads the nation in scoring at 28.1 points per game and is only 63 points away from breaking Pete Maravich’s NCAA career scoring record. Jerrod Calhoun was named Coach of the Year for leading Youngstown State to the regular season title.
Milwaukee’s B.J. Freeman was selected to the All Horizon League second team. Fellow Panthers Elijah Jamin made the All Freshman team and Ahmed Rand was named to the All Defensive team.
The Green Bay Phoenix men will take part in the opening round. GB (3-28) travels to Dayton as the number 10 seed to face 7th seeded Wright State (17-14).
