It’s on to the Barbasol Horizon League Basketball Tournament for the Green Bay Phoenix men’s and women’s basketball teams. The Ladies captured the outright Horizon League regular season championship on Saturday by defeating Purdue Fort Wayne 70-64 at the Kress Center. Trailing at the half for only the fourth time all season, the Lady Phoenix went on a 10-0 run in the third quarter to grab a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Sydney Levy led the way with 20 points. Bailey Butler added 14 with 8 assists and Jasmine Kondrakiewicz produced a second straight double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Green Bay has reeled off 11 straight wins to finish 18-2 in the conference, 25-4 overall. They earn a first round bye in the conference tournament and will host a quarterfinal game at the Kress on Thursday night. A win would send them to Indianapolis for the Horizon semifinals next week.
The men endured the worst regular season in program history by falling to Purdue Fort Wayne 78-61 at home Saturday. Randy Tucker led the Phoenix with 19. GB went just 3-28 on the year, 2-18 in conference play, tied for the bottom but they’ll be the number 10 seed in the conference tournament and travel to Dayton to meet 7th seeded Wright State on Tuesday night. Green Bay lost both regular season meetings to the Raiders, 99-67 in Green Bay and 77-46 on the road.
The Milwaukee Panther women dropped their finale to Cleveland State 63-56 to finish 10-18 on the year, 8-12 in the Horizon but they will still host a first round game Tuesday night as the number 7 seed, taking on #10 Robert Morris.
The Milwaukee men’s team scored an 81-72 win over Cleveland State, denying the Vikings a share of the regular season title, giving Youngstown State sole possession of first. The Panthers got 31 points from B.J. Freeman to finish 20-10, 14-6 in the Horizon, good enough for the number two seed. They’ll get a first round bye and host a quarterfinal game on Thursday night.
