The Green Bay Phoenix women looked pretty in pink on Sunday. Wearing pink and gray uniforms to highlight a breast cancer awareness effort, the Lady Phoenix defeated Wright State 75-55 on Sunday at the Kress Center to earn their seventh straight victory and stay atop the Horizon League race with two weeks to go in the regular season. GB played with the lead almost from the jump and got a career high double-double from Natalie McNeal. She recorded the feat by halftime and finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Sydney Levy topped the Phoenix with 17 as GB outscored the Raiders 42-14 in the paint and held the visitors to 29.1% shooting from the floor. Green Bay improves to 21-4 on the year, 14-2 in the Horizon, good for a half game lead on Cleveland State which can pull back even with a victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on Monday night.
The Green Bay men put up a good fight against Detroit Mercy Saturday night at the Kress but fell to the Titans 76-71. Clarence Cummings III poured in 20 points and Zae Blake addeed 18 but it wasn’t enough to offset 41 points from Antoine Davis of the Titans. The nation’s leading scorer is trying to chase down Pete Maravich as the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer. Davis now has 3482 points in his career in 138 games played. Maravich totaled 3667 at LSU, playing just 83 games and without the three point line, averaging 44.2 points per game in his career, a record that may never get touched. Green Bay falls to 3-24 with the loss, 2-14 in Horizon League play.
The Milwaukee Panthers rallied to beat Oakland 80-77 in overtime on Saturday night to remain tied for first in the Horizon at 12-4, they are 18-8 overall.
In Big Ten play, the Wisconsin Badgers suffered a costly loss, falling at Nebraska Saturday 73-63 in overtime. The Badgers (14-10, 6-8) led by as many as 17 points early in the second half before the Cornhuskers rallied with a 20-2 run to take the lead. Chucky Hepburn led Wisconsin with 19 points.
10th ranked Marquette stayed atop the Big East race with another impressive win, 89-75 over Georgetown. Tyler Kolek, Oso Ighodaro and Kameron Jones all scored 14 points as the Golden Eagles reached 20 wins on the season against 6 losses. Marquette leads the Big East at 12-3, a half game in front of Xavier and Creighton. Marquette will host the 13th ranked Musketeers on Wednesday night.
In other women’s games, the St. Norbert Green Knights celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with another convincing win, 75-46 over Concordia of Chicago. Kaycee Gierczak led the Knights with 26 points as they remained perfect in the NACC at 16-0, clinching at least a share of the regular season conference championship with two games left to play. SNC is 20-3 overall.
Northern Kentucky defeated Milwaukee on Sunday 81-71, dropping the Panther women to 8-16, 6-10 in the Horizon League.
The Wisconsin Badger women on Saturday got 22 points from Julie Pospisilova in beating Minnesota in overtime 76-70 in Minneapolis. The Lady Badgers are now 8-18 on the year, 3-11 in the Big Ten.
