GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich broke a city council tie Tuesday night, deciding the city should not further pursue a policy for flagpoles.
Last summer, a pride flag was raised on the city hall flagpole for the first time. Since then, city council members have been discussing a policy for which flags should be flown on city poles.
The latest proposal stated only the U.S. flag, the state flag, and the city flag should be allowed, unless otherwise directed by law.
“We could have some mayors with some really far out attitudes and fly some flags,” said Alderperson Chris Wery, who proposed the policy. “Just fly the flags we have, treat everyone equally like we have.”
“This represents a really retro-grade, backward looking view of our community and I just don’t have any time or tolerance for it,” said Genrich.
Before a lengthy public discussion on the issue, Genrich said he would have vetoed a policy if one was passed.
