GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Last week’s cold temperatures allowed some of Green Bay’s outdoor ice rinks to freeze.
One of them being Colburn.
“We just came out to play some pond hockey, we play hockey and baseball together so we are just enjoying the little bit of nicer weather since it’s been cold all week,” says Caden Bartelme.
Bartelme and his friends come every winter to play hockey with each other outside.
They say they have been waiting for the rink to be ready for the past few months.
“Yeah we were kind of getting impatient, like every week we were checking to see if they put ice on, it’s been grass all year long then we came here today and it was all ice,” says Brecken Staidl.
The boys were excited to have the ice all to themselves.
“I thought there would be more people, I thought it would be busier,” says Staidl.
Other people headed out to Triangle Hill to go tubing on Saturday, some of the kids there say that’s their favorite thing to do in the winter.
Parents at the hill were glad their kids were playing outside, and enjoying the new magic carpet ride.
“We’re happy to know the lift was up and running this winter, so we’re excited to get a free ride back up the hill,” says Anthony Fameree.
Fameree feels it’s important to get out and enjoy winter.
“There’s all four seasons and there’s different things to do for every season, so if you can do a little bit with each season, you get a variety over the course of the year,” says Fameree.
Bartelme agrees.
“It’s getting active, it’s a part of living in the Midwest, I always think it’s kind of iconic, you get to meet new people and make memories,” says Bartelme.
But with the good times comes a warning. The rinks are dependent on Mother Nature and with warmer temperatures forecast this week, the ice may not last long.
