FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office was involved in a high-speed vehicle pursuit early Saturday morning.
A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy noticed a vehicle with license plates that did not match the vehicle and the plates were also suspended, according to the department.
The deputy pulled the vehicle over on Johnson Street at Pioneer Road in the City of Fond du Lac around 2:50 a.m.
Authorities say the deputy noticed the driver may have been impaired by alcohol.
The driver, when asked to provide identification, gave his brother’s name.
The sheriff’s office says the deputy was eventually able to positively ID the driver as a 35-year-old Oshkosh resident who had active arrest warrants. He was also on probation for vehicle operator fleeing/eluding an officer.
The driver then refused to exit his vehicle and left the scene of the traffic stop, traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Johnson Street, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies were able to deploy a tire deflation device but the vehicle was able to continue eastbound on Johnson Street through the City of Fond du Lac and began to travel eastbound on Highway 23, east of Fond du Lac.
Investigators say the suspect vehicle approached the Hillview Road intersection and entered the turn lane to go north but was unable to slow down and went into the center median.
The suspect vehicle traveled eastbound in the westbound lanes at which time the deputy was able to make contact with the suspect vehicle and disabling the vehicle.
Authorities say the driver exited the vehicle and ran from the crash scene.
The sheriff’s deputy chased the driver and deployed his stun gun and took the suspect into custody.
The pursuit covered a distance of approximately 15 miles.
Both vehicles sustained significant damage, according to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office is recommending charges of felony fleeing/eluding, two counts of resisting/obstructing, 2nd degree recklessly endangering safety, and bail jumping.
Authorities say the driver is also receiving citations for OWI 2nd offense, operating after revocation, violation of license restrictions for failure to install an ignition interlock device, and speeding.
The deputy sustained possible injuries as the result of his airbags deploying while making contact with the suspect vehicle.
The suspect was treated at the hospital and released into the custody of the sheriff’s department.
