MENOMINEE, MI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Students will finally have their first in-person classes of 2022-23 at Menominee Middle/High School next week.
The building has been closed since a rainstorm left it flooded in August. Asbestos was also found on the building’s first floor. The return to the building was delayed several times, including last month when an environmental test revealed the building was not yet safe.
The school district says it obtained an occupancy permit and an air quality clearance for the building this week. That allowed teachers and support staff members to report to work on Wednesday.
Students are scheduled to begin in-person classes Feb. 8.
We want to personally thank you for the patience that has been extended to the district as we faced unprecedented circumstances,” superintendent Richard Sarau wrote in a letter to families. “We remain sensitive that all students need a transition back to school. Therefore, our school leadership team, teachers, and all staff are busy preparing for their return.”
An open house is set for 4-6 p.m. Feb. 7 for new students and anyone else who wants to see the progress of construction.
