GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The attack of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, Tennessee has garnered national attention; as many are focusing on the Memphis Police Department’s use of force that lead to his death.
Chief Chris Davis from the Green Bay Police Department said the video of the attack that was released on Friday was difficult to watch.
“I watched every minute of that video over the weekend, as difficult as it was,” said Davis. “Because part of my job is making sure noting like that ever happens here.”
Davis said force is only acceptable when it matches the level of resistance the officer is facing.
According to the Green Bay Police Department’s Use of Force Policy, officers may use force legitimately when it is needed to achieve control in five specific situations:
(a) To achieve and maintain control of resistive subjects
(b) To detain persons reasonably suspected of criminal behavior
(c) To make lawful arrests
(d) To defend themselves or others
(e) To prevent escape
(f) To take a person into custody for emergency detention or protective custody
When an officer of the department uses force of their law enforcement duties, their use of force must fit into one of these categories:
(a) A trained technique
(b) A dynamic application of a trained technique
(c) A technique not trained but justified under the circumstances
When force is used in a police situation, a review is conducted which goes through the department’s chain of commands. This helps assure all policies were complied with and the use of force was ethical.
