GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A woman in the Fox Valley knows first-hand how devastating the situation in Ukraine is.
Painting on old kilims, or rugs — Irina Visnevscaia draws inspiration from her culture.
Irina is an accomplished journalist and artist from Odessa, Ukraine. After visiting family in the U.S. over the holidays, she was not able to return home.
She is a Ukrainian refugee who is studying English as a part of Fox Valley Technical College’s English Language Learning program.
Her art will be featured around the country.
Twenty-four pieces will be displayed at a Heart and Soul of Ukraine tour in San Diego.
Irina talked about about what her art means, explaining her observations that war touches history, artifacts and everything. Her daughter, Anastasia Reetz, translated:
“Every painting that she does tells a story. It’s a story about people, about individuals or as a whole about nations, and she never lost that part of her.”
Irina doesn’t know what the future holds but will continue to express her observations, feelings and culture through art.
