KEWAUNEE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Kewaunee is entering a new era of leadership for its police department.
Robin Mueller, previously the department’s assistant police chief, became the city’s first female police chief Monday. A Kewaunee native, Mueller was also the city’s first female police officer.
She was sworn in following the recognition of retired Police Chief James Kleiman, Jr. — who served the department for more than three decades. Kleiman is the longest-serving police officer in the history of the Kewaunee Police Department.
It was an emotional day, as Mueller’s parents pinned the badge onto her chest. Her boyfriend and daughters then pinned the stars on her collar as well.
“Standing here today and looking out into the crowd and seeing so many people — my family, my friends, fellow law enforcement from Kewaunee County but then also people from all the departments we work with on a daily basis, […] but knowing all those people through the years, growing up and working through the department, it’s just really strengthened our relationship and make it easier to work together.”
Mueller explained that the Kewaunee police department is not just a family; rather, the entire community works together as a family.
Looking forward, Mueller says she plans for the department to emphasize officers’ wellness, though she recognizes the hurdles that may come with a smaller city’s budget.
She is excited to announce, though, that her first full-time hire as chief was also a woman.
