SHAWANO LAKE (WTAQ-WLUK) — Ice conditions may be a concern for ice fishermen in Northeast Wisconsin. Despite the mild winter dozens of shanties still covered the east end of Shawano Lake on Friday.
Brett Milhans was out there.
“I’ve been on a few other lakes this year, and haven’t had as much luck. So as long as we’re catching them, it’s all right,” said Milhans, of Gillett.
Anglers say there are more than 14 inches of ice in the area.
“It’s not too slushy out here. It’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be out here this morning. It’s been nice,” said Adam Anderson, Gillett.
Officials say people need to be very careful when traveling on the ice. They say the situation can change on a daily, or even hourly basis.
“It can absolutely. We have had a very mild winter, and so with that being said, the areas, closer to shore, the landings can definitely be a little iffy. So definitely check conditions before you head out,” said Kayla Sasse, DNR Outdoor Skills Trainer.
Sasse says that includes the Fox River in De Pere. On Friday morning, in an area where fishing through the ice typically happens in January, two boats were spotted in open water near Voyageur Park downstream of the De Pere Dam.
