OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Oshkosh Fire Department broke a record heading into 2023.
The department announced Friday that it responded to over 10,000 calls in 2022 — the first time in its history.
The official total was 10,405 — averaging out to 29 calls each day. This is an 8% increase since 2021 and a 15% increase since 2019.
Fire Chief Mike Stanley says most of these calls were fall-related for the city’s older population, and offered some advice.
“Avoid throw rugs in the home.” said Stanley. “We see so many of our senior population that is tripping over throw rugs or some other type of clutter on the ground and that’s what is leading to their fall.”
Aside from falls, kitchen fires due to inattentive cooking also account for a large number of calls.
The department says it will continue to evolve with the Oshkosh community to provide services to its residents and visitors.
