WAUPACA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A review of actions by the former Waupaca County District Attorney requested by the sheriff found no violations by the D.A., according to a report.
Former D.A. Veronica Isherwood, now an assistant D.A., and Sheriff Tim Wilz have been battling about how the sheriff’s department handled changes to a report in a criminal case — and the subsequent consequences in court.
Isherwood alerted other D.A.s in the state about a report in a criminal trespass case written by a sheriff’s deputy, then “changed” or “corrected,” depending on the point of view.
Wilz filed a complaint, requesting an investigation into Isherwood’s actions. That review was done by Outagamie County, as Wilz did not want the state to handle it.
In the seven-page report, Outagamie County Assistant District Attorney Randy Schneider found nothing illegal by either side.
“I recognize this case has political overtones. Both District Attorney Isherwood and the Sheriff have issued press releases criticizing the other. I find nothing illegal in this behavior by either party. It is well within each party’s First Amendment rights. In sum, I conclude District Attorney Isherwood took actions consistent with her training and her ethical obligations. For these reasons, I find no violations of law by the District Attorney and I decline to take further action,” Schneider wrote.
