GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – $15,000 — that’s how much HSHS Saint Vincent Hospital is offering in bonuses for many nurses to work for them.
Executive Director for Bay Area Workforce Development Board Matt Valiquette says health care is an industry with high demand.
“I’m not surprised to see Saint Vincent and others offer hiring bonuses that high.”
The HSHS careers website shows dozens of openings for registered nurses in Green Bay.
Some are eligible for the large sign on bonus.
Valiquette tells FOX 11 businesses often offer more than just a bonus to retain employees.
“I think it’s one of those tools, at least for a short-term solution, that more and more employers are looking to offer. Let me add, though, in terms of a long-term solution, I suspect most companies are looking at a more comprehensive package to attract and retain talent.”
FOX11 reached out to St. Vincent Hospital for an interview on the topic but only received this statement.
“Like many health care organizations across the country, HSHS Wisconsin hospitals, including St. Vincent and St. Mary’s hospitals in Green Bay, are utilizing various tactics such as sign-on bonuses and competitive wages to recruit high level talent. Upon completing orientation and experiencing the HSHS mission at work, our hospitals aspire to retain these colleagues as we continue to provide high quality health care within our communities. HSHS Wisconsin hospitals are also proud to work with local higher education institutions to spark students’ interest in the health care field and provide advanced training to future health care graduates.”
Bellin Health Director of Nursing and Clinical Practice Ashley Lyman says it’s been a struggle attracting talent.
“I’d say that we’re stable, and it’s a little bit uncomfortable,” said Lyman.
With several open full time equivalent positions, Bellin offers a $5,000 to $10,000 sign on bonus.
She adds there’s a risk some may leave for a higher bonus.
But there’s more to nursing than a check.
“I really do feel that if you meet with the individuals, you listen to them and understand their needs. And if you can meet those needs, I don’t think that’s a concern.”
Lyman adds you need to balance attracting new talent while investing in who you have now.
