OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Many school districts are still looking for substitute teachers.
The Cooperative Educational Service Agency is working to get subs trained and into schools as soon as possible.
CESA 6 had a training event in Oshkosh Tuesday, with about 30 people in attendance.
A couple of them are current sheriff’s deputies.
“I thought that this would be a good way to give back to the community,” says Sergeant Kevin Manning.
“It is nerve-wracking and it is new, so it will be challenging,” says Sergeant Chad Beres.
With a two year college degree, you can become a sub in Wisconsin with the one-day training at CESA 6 through the Residency In Teacher Foundation.
“We will give them a certificate electronically at the end of the day that they could go on the website tonight and be applying for their license and they could be employed in schools tomorrow,” Director of the RITE program at CESA 6 Nancy Jaeger.
In addition to the sheriff’s deputies, there were also eight veterans present in the training.
“We offer free sub training for veterans as well,” says Jaeger.
The cost for everyone else is $100, but Jaeger tells FOX 11 in this session they learn more than just curriculum.
“They are learning about classroom management, but then they are learning about behavior management, and a big focus of our training is setting themselves up for success and students up for success.”
Beres says after his career in law enforcement, he would like to become a teacher. Substituting right now will provide him with experience.
“I work a rotating schedule, so I know my whole schedule for the year, so I know what my off days are so I can put myself as available for when I am off.”
Beres says this will also help his career.
“When you are in law enforcement, you are interacting with people on a one-to-one basis, or even groups of people, constantly so this will just help that.”
Manning tells FOX 11 he has never taught in a school before, but he is excited about the opportunity.
“Get to know the kids, get to know other people in the community.”
The training for Tuesday’s session is for a short-term substitute license.
“I am trying to take in as much information as I can here. I think It will be way different teaching kids than teaching peers,” says Beres.
CESA 6 is doing another training event on Sept. 15.
