APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Investigators have released the names of the officers who shot a man in Appleton earlier this month.
Officer Bryce Rudebeck and Officer Tony Shuman shot Daniel Pesavento Aug. 12, the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation said Thursday.
Pesavento, 29, was taken to the hospital, where he died.
DCI says police were called to the 1500 block of N. Birchwood Avenue for a report of a domestic disturbance. Once there, officers confronted Pesavento, whom DCI says had a handgun. Officers tried to negotiate with Pesavento, but the confrontation ended with Rudebeck and Shuman shooting him. No law enforcement officials were hurt.
Both officers have five years of experience in law enforcement. They have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
DCI says a gun was found at the scene. Officials are also investigating police body camera video and witness cellphone video.
DCI is investigating the shooting along with the DOJ Office of Crime Victim Services, Wisconsin State Patrol and Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office. State law requires an outside agency to investigate when someone dies after law enforcement uses force.
When the investigation is finished, the results will be turned over to the Outagamie County District Attorney’s Office for a decision on whether to file criminal charges.
