KESHENA, WI (WTAQ) — Chronic absenteeism in schools across the country has doubled since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, one local district is hoping to tackle it head-on.
The Menominee Indian School District is now launching an initiative aimed at getting students back in class–and keeping them there.
“Chronic absenteeism looks at absenteeism, whether students are excused or unexcused, and tries to get to root causes behind why they’re not there,” School Superintendent, Wendell Waukau said Wednesday. “The latest numbers that were given to me is that schools across the country are reporting almost 50 percent [chronic absenteeism] among students. Chronic absenteeism is rising in our country.”
The new initiative is called called the ’90 Day Community Call to Action’. The initiative includes a series of workshops designed to engage parents and the community on school attendance.
A kickoff event is being held Wednesday night at the FACE Center in Keshena at 5pm.
