The second verse was the same as the first. The Milwaukee Brewers swept the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field winning both games by scores of 5-3. Wednesday afternoon’s win was accomplished with the long ball. Rowdy Tellez hit a pair of solo home runs, giving him a second, multi-homer game this week and 15 on the year. The first put Milwaukee up 1-0 in the second and he would add another in the 8th. Luis Urias belted a two run shot in the 5th to give Milwaukee a 3-2 and Jace Peterson delivered some insurance with a solo blast in the top of the 9th.
Eric Lauer gave up 3 runs on six hits in four and a third innings. Miami plated 2 on a bloop double that fell between the outfielders. The other run came in on a disputed line drive over the third base bag that Milwaukee thought was foul. Brad Boxberger picked up the win in relief as the Milwaukee bullpen pitched 4 and two thirds scoreless innings. Josh Hader gave up a hit and a walk but got three fly ball outs to record his 24th save.
There was one highlight reel defensive play as centerfielder Jonathan Davis dove headlong into the wall to make a spectacular grab. He crashed hard into the padding and his hat went flying. Davis finished the inning but was then replaced. Manager Craig Counsell said he was feeling sore but will apparently be OK.
The Brewers improve to 44-33 on the year and with Miami beating St. Louis 4-3, Milwaukee’s lead in the NL Central is up to a game and a half. The Brewers head to Pittsburgh to open a four game series with the Pirates. Adrian Houser will face J.T. Brubaker in the opener at PNC. Pre-game coverage begins at 5:30 PM with a 6:05 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
