OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An abortion ban exists in Wisconsin. It was passed in 1849, and it’s unclear if it will take full effect now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v Wade.
Democratic Representative Gordon Hintz calls it devastating and says it will motivate people in the November election.
“The overwhelming majority of people in this country and state support access to abortion,” said Hintz. “It’s a sad day for this country. ”
Republican State Senator Roger Roth praised the decision.
“I think this is a tremendous victory for the pro-life movement here in Wisconsin and for the thousands of children that will certainly be saved after this,” said Roth.
He doesn’t think it will have a significant impact on the November election, Hintz disagrees.
“It’d be hard press to think that any woman out there who thinks they should be treated as an equal citizen to every man, doesn’t feel some resentment of having rights they had for 50 years being taken away from them,” said Hintz.
Governor Tony Evers called the Legislature into a special session on Wednesday to address the state’s 19th century abortion ban. Republican lawmakers gaveled in and out in just 14 seconds.
