MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Officials took a step forward in preserving an historic landmark vessel.
Divers were underneath the USS Cobia at the Maritime Museum in Manitowoc Thursday for an underwater hull inspection.
The inspection is to prepare the USS Cobia for dry docking.
According to a sub curator, keeping the USS Cobia in “ship shape” on the water costs over $150,000 annually.
By bringing the former WWII submarine on land, it would give officials a better way to keep it preserved.
The USS Cobia was restored at the Maritime Museum in 1970 and has since been declared a national historic landmark.
They expect the submarine to be on land by 2025.
