GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — As people fill up their gas tanks, they react to a proposed gas tax holiday that President Joe Biden says could save them money.
“It’s great. I mean, I wish it was a lot more because the gas prices are just ridiculous, and so any little savings we can get certainly would help a lot of people, me included,” said driver Dave Pilz.
The Associated General Contractors of America released a statement saying: “The irresponsible proposal, if enacted, would leave a massive hole in the federal Highway Trust Fund that pays for federal investments in road, bridge, and transit improvement projects that would need to be filled with new taxes or additional deficit spending.”
“It’s kind of one of those that people are kind of sick of the price going up, so if they can pay less, then they’ll do that — as opposed to, I don’t think they are as worried about fixing roads at this point in time than they are the gas prices the way that they are,” said another driver, Trevor Myers.
Although some say the relief would be nice, others are concerned about the financial effect this would have on the Highway Trust Fund.
It will be up to the state to take action on its tax as well to bring down prices. The current state tax in Wisconsin is about 30 cents per gallon. This could amount to around 50 cents savings per gallon for Wisconsin residents.
“I don’t think it’s fair. I think they should have a separate budget. I mean, yeah, the 50 cents would be great for us. But if they’re not going to fix anything what’s the point?” said Deborah Wood-Romitti.
“I think it’s probably a good short-term fix maybe for a few months or so, but I don’t think its a long-term fix,” said another driver Kendra Lachcik. “Entities need the funding to keep things going and if those don’t have the funding other things are going to go downhill.”
