GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Strawberry picking season began this week at local farms, but the weather might have an impact on this year’s crop.
Sunny Hill Farm in Green Bay invites people to pick their own strawberries from the patch, but with the current heat, it’s unclear exactly what this season could look like.
“Well, the first day was really nice and today we’ve had really nice berries too,” said Owner Kerry Bruntz. “It’s hard to predict from the beginning to the end, but the recent weather we’ve had isn’t ideal with the 90’s and always windy…It could affect the length of the season. Things could ripen up quickly or not last as long as it normally does. But that remains to be seen.”
People can stop by the farm, check in and receive a container, and then someone in the patch will direct them to a row for picking. Strawberries are going for $2.25 a pound right now.
Bruntz is feeling fairly good about the crop, at least for now.
“We’re always hoping for the best, obviously. I wouldn’t say this year is a bumper crop, but so far it’s looking pretty good. With a little luck, we could get a couple weeks out of it,” Bruntz said.
