GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Dr. Brad Burmeister of Bellin Health predicted weeks ago that we would see peaks and valleys when it comes to COVID cases.
On Friday, Brown and Door Counties moved into the high category for community transmission.
“It’s a little bit surprising that we’ve found ourselves in the high community transmission of COVID,” said Burmeister.
He says that’s because we’ve seen a decline in positive cases statewide.
So far, hospitals haven’t felt the burden.
“We’re operating at 20%, or a fifth, of our peak number of admissions we had during this big last peak,” Burmeister said. “So it doesn’t really seem to be taking up a significant amount of our time from a clinical perspective delivering care.”
Not everyone says they’ll follow the CDC’s recommendation to wear masks.
Joyce Fruhmen is a former surgical nurse.
“I’ll get my booster shots when I’m supposed to, but other than that I probably won’t do a lot different,” said Fruhmen.
She doesn’t see herself wearing a mask indoors in the future. Instead, she’ll take other precautions.
“I think that the deaths from COVID are probably on the decline,” said Fruhmen. “There’s better treatments now and I think those who were going to die from it early on did.”
Burmeister says even with a high category designation, we’re in a much better place than we were in previous peaks.
A reason he’s hoping we return to the low or medium category sooner rather than later.
“Indoors masking is going to help us get there a little bit sooner, but sort of regardless from that perspective, I think the trajectory seems good if we continue to follow the trend the state is experiencing,” Burmeister said.
