GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — June 11 was the opening day for the Resch Aquatic Center in Green Bay.
But Joannes and Colburn pools will remain closed.
Green Bay only needs to meet two requirements in order to open all three pools: eight more lifeguards, and 10 more facility attendants.
That’s according to city recreation supervisor, Anne Moeller.
“We are getting close yes. We aren’t quite there, we are still certifying a whole corp of new lifeguards and that is not completed yet,” said Moeller.
Swimmers haven’t been in Joannes pool for the past two summers and so far it will stay closed. Moeller says she’s optimistic that Colburn and Joannes will open soon.
“So the city sounded pretty optimistic that you’d be able to open all three pools, what’s changed in the last couple of weeks?” asked Fox 11.
“Nothing really has changed, it just takes a while especially to get our lifeguards certified. So we’re still hoping to get three pools open,” said Moeller.
Moeller says the city is in a better position than last summer. This year, Green Bay is offering bonuses.
Oshkosh has a $2 wage increase at Pollock Community Waterpark.
Parks revenue facilities manager Jenny McCollian says the increase has helped this summer.
“We just recently tied everything together to make everything work for the summer without having to reduce any hours at all,” said McCollian.
“Do you think you’ll be set for the rest of the summer?” asked Fox 11.
“That is a very hard question, we hope, we hope that everyone we have right now will stay with us and we’ll be able to operate at full capacity and not have to adjust,” said McCollian.
“It kills me, we want to be there for the community we want to see Joannes open,” said Moeller.
Moeller and McCollian have the same goal in mind, to keep pushing people to try out lifeguarding. Because they don’t want to see any more empty pools on hot summer days.
