GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — For the first time ever, the city of Green Bay raised the Progress Flag at City Hall in recognition of June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month.
While the city has made proclamations in the past, Tuesday’s flag raising was the first.
Under the tenure of Mayor Eric Genrich, Green Bay has tripled its score in the Municipal Equality Index, which measures the wellbeing and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community. Before he took office, it was a 24 and now it is at an 82, on a scale of 1-100.
“It’s a collaborative effort, it takes a lot of hands to advance things but the important thing to recognize is that Green Bay is an open and welcoming community, it’s just a matter of demonstrating that in a public way, so this is a piece of that effort,” Genrich said.
Genrich said this was achieved by actions made through the common council and other departments, including the Green Bay Police Department which has developed a Pride Team that supports the LGBTQ+ community.
