OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The trial for the teen who allegedly stabbed a police officer at Oshkosh West High School will not happen next week because of the school shooting in Texas.
Grant Fuhrman, 19, is charged with one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide for the Dec. 3, 2019 incident. Prosecutors say Officer Mike Wissink shot Fuhrman after Fuhrman stabbed him. Students and staff evacuated, and classes were canceled for two days.
A two-week trial had been scheduled to start Tuesday, but during a hearing scheduled and held Thursday, the trial date was removed from the calendar.
A motion submitted by Fuhrman’s attorney argued he could not get a fair trial in the current environment.
The Uvalde shooting “is an outside influence that prevents Grant Fuhrman from receiving a trial from an impartial jury at this time,” wrote attorney Timothy Casper. “As the court is aware, this case involves a physical altercation in a school on the school resource officer and involves the use of a firearm. The case in Uvalde, TX will be on every venireman’s mind during the jury selection on May 31, 2022… This case should be continued until the decibel level regarding school shooting has been diminished.”
The judge agreed, and the trial was postponed.
A status conference is scheduled for June 7, when a new date is expected to be scheduled.
The case is scheduled to be heard by a Winnebago County jury, after defense requests to get a jury from another county were denied.
