MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A former Two Rivers teacher charged with having a sexual relationship with a student told police she hoped for a long-term future with the teen, according to charges filed Thursday.
Rebecca Kilps, 34, is charged with three counts of sexual assault by a school staff member for the encounters with a 17-year-old student.
According to criminal complaint, Kilps’ husband discovered suspicious messages in her phone, and confronted her about it.
Police talked to the teen, who said he met Kilps in Spanish class. They would occasionally exchange messages on social media but earlier this year the frequency increased and the subject matter became more personal. He then detailed several sexual encounters between them.
Kilps initially denied to police there was any sexual contact, but later admitted it, telling police she knew it was illegal.
“Rebecca said she was in a bad relationship for years with her husband and hoped that after VICTIM graduated she would end her relationship with her husband,” the complaint states. “Rebecca said VICTIM was different because he was mature and easy to talk to and form a relationship with Rebecca said she and VICTIM talked about being together in the future”
Kilps made a bail appearance in court Wednesday, and is being held on a $10,000 cash bond. She returns to court Tuesday for a formal initial appearance.
If convicted, each count carries a maximum penalty of six years in the prison system.
Kilps resigned, according to the school district.
