GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Green Bay Packers honored some of the brave men and women who serve in Wisconsin law enforcement.
These officers were nominated after going above and beyond the call of duty.
June 13th, 2021, Sergeant Mark Berner, Sergeant Tim Johnson, and Deputy Dustan Peterson from the Brown County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in Green Bay.
“It was a big storm that night, the three of us responded out there to the individuals that capsized their boats, and fortunately, we were able to rescue six out of seven individuals one was a little child in that event,” said Peterson.
Winds were between 30 to 50 miles per hour, and waves were more than 8 feet high. Still, the three proceeded with the rescue.
“I think once we realized there is a five-year-old out there it was no thought on our part it was, let’s go, let’s go get them,” said Johnson.
Now, shy of a year later, the Green Bay Packers honored the deputies as Packers Protect & Serve Award winners.
They were among more than 10 law enforcement members around the room who also went above and beyond the call of duty.
“That’s why we’re all here, we have brothers and sisters that would have done the same thing in different fashions,” said Johnson.
Daniel Thompson is the Chief of the Waukesha Police Department, his team took home the department award after their brave response to the deadly Christmas Parade tragedy.
“Resilience isn’t bouncing back, it’s bouncing forward,” said Thompson.
Thompson says even despite recent movements against the police, they still show up to work.
“Police being evil, hearing about police brutality. Here’s the thing, is being a leader and being a public servant leader is doing the right thing even when it’s uncomfortable to do so even when it’s not fun to do so.”
“We just continue to do our jobs every single day and perform well and were very fortunate to be here in Northeast Wisconsin because I think the support in Northeast Wisconsin has always been strong for law enforcement,” said Brown County Sheriff Todd Delaine.
Delaine and Thompson agree, that regardless of what people think about law enforcement there are much more officers than who are in this room who act as heroes, every single day.
The winners received a $2,000 grant to benefit their department or a nonprofit of their choice.
