WOLF RIVER, WI (WTAQ) – Temperatures are supposed to reach the 70’s this weekend, and that also means water temperatures could rise to a point where sturgeon decide to make their move.
“Not just today, but throughout the weekend, we’re gonna see water temperatures warm up pretty quick,” said DNR Sturgeon Biologist, Margaret Stadig. “So it’s still gonna be a little while, but these warmer temperatures could really expedite that warming. So we might see some spawning by the end of the weekend.”
But don’t get too excited about the sturgeon spawning run, at least not yet. Stadig says sturgeon could wait until later to actually spawn – or we could even see a split spawn as temperatures fall next week.
“When the colder temperatures come in, that could slow things down or even halt it for that matter…They have started because temperatures are warm enough, and then stopped because the temperatures dipped down,” Stadig told WTAQ News. “As opposed to a split spawn, it could all happen within a matter of three days. Then there’s other years that a split spawn happens…Only time will tell. It will depend solely on how warm it does get over the weekend, and then eventually how cold it gets next week.”
With the warmer weather you might see more activity, but sturgeon may wait to spawn.
“Definitely by the end of the weekend, the sturgeon might not be spawning, but you’ll probably see some activity,” Stadig said.
You can learn more and track activity on the DNR’s website.
