Milwaukee Brewers
Thrown for a loop on the eve of the 2022 season, the Milwaukee Brewers acquired a pair of catchers on Wednesday. The need arose when Major League Baseball suspended Pedro Severino for 80 games because of a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy involving performance enhancing drugs. Left with only returning veteran Omar Narvaez and minor leaguer Brett Sullivan, the Brewers shipped Sullivan along with outfield prospect Korry Howell to the San Diego Padres for Victor Caratini. The 28 year old, switch hitting catcher was the number two catcher for the Padres last season hitting 7 home runs and driving in 39. He also spent several seasons as the backup catcher with the Chicago Cubs. With Sullivan moved, Milwaukee then dealt two prospects to the Miami Marlins for Alex Jackson, a former number one pick of the Atlanta Braves. The Brewers gave up outfielder Hayden Cantrelle and pitcher Alexis Ramierez to Miami. Jackson will open at AAA Nashville but he must count on the Brewers’ 40 man roster for the entire season. Caratini is expected to join the team in time for Milwaukee’s season opener against the Cubs at Wrigley Field Thursday afternoon.
