GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Campaign season is here, and both sides are working to rally support.
Local candidates for Tuesday’s spring election gathered at the Brown County GOP to “Get Out and Vote”.
Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson took part in the event, after announcing a run for a third term in January.
The Republican saying his biggest rival is the media.
“There’s an awful lot that I said that people have criticized me for spreading misinformation,” said Senator Johnson. “But what I’ve been saying is true. It’s accurate and it’s been proven true.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of Brown County kicked off its canvass at noon Sunday.
“We’ve got dozens and dozens of volunteers that are both virtually phone banking and doing some phone banking inside the office,” said the vice chair of the party, Terry Lee.
Lee says even though the candidates on the ballot don’t represent a party, they’re working to back candidates with progressive values.
Still, one of the biggest names on the ballot is Wisconsin’s senate seat.
That election isn’t until November, but Lee adds Democrats are preparing now.
“We get calls daily , messages saying ‘I want to get involved, I want to get involved’,” said Lee. “We’re organizing them and that’s what’s going to win this election here against Ron Johnson.”
As for the issues, both sides had this message for first time voters:
“High gasoline prices, inflation,” said Senator Johnson. “Out of control, illegal immigration.”
“Look at what your values are,” said Lee. “Right now, democracy is on the line.”
After April’s election, comes the primary, which will be held on August 9th.
Following that one, will be the general election which will be held on November 8th.
