GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — March is problem gambling awareness month.
Rose Blozinski with the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling says it’s not a coincidence that they picked March.
“March was chosen because of March Madness,” Blozinski told WTAQ. “That’s the reason behind that, to bring awareness to the amount of sports betting.”
Blozinski says they get more hotline calls around this time of year–between the Super Bowl and March Madness–as people fill out their brackets and place their bets.
For those whose issue is sports betting, Blozinski says, they may use this time in a desperate attempt to recoup previous losses from the end of the football season.
“Most people can do it for fun, they spend whatever they can afford and do it socially,” said Blozinski. “We help the people who can’t do it socially.”
If you suspect that you or someone you know is struggling with gambling, Blozinski says you can call them at 800-426-2535 or visit online at wi-problemgamblers.org.
