OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – University of Wisconsin System President Tommy Thompson is stepping down from his role later this month. But before leaving, Thompson is visiting UW campuses around the state.
UW System interim president and the longest-serving governor in Wisconsin Tommy Thompson announced his resignation back in January.
Monday, Thompson showed his gratitude for his time as president at the UW-Oshkosh campus.
“What do you say when people reach out, do things that they don’t have to do and acknowledge the work that’s been done, except for me to say, ‘Thank you,’” Thompson said.
That gratitude was reciprocated.
“On behalf of the grateful city council and citizens of Oshkosh extend our highest commendation to Tommy G. Thompson and call upon our people to recognize and celebrate his many contributions,” said city of Oshkosh mayor Lori Palmeri.
During his visit, Thompson also stopped at the new cybersecurity center at UWO, spoke about his role in the fight against COVID-19 on campuses, and also about what he believes is needed for the system, going forward.
“The Legislature’s gotta start funding the universities better!”
Thompson was most notably known for facing and tackling COVID-19 head-on, even going as far as choosing to not side with his own Republican party, or those within the university, opposed to his beliefs.
For his efforts, Thompson was also recognized and thanked via video by none other than the chief medical advisor to President Biden Dr. Anthony Fauci.
“He is a wonderful human being. He is tough as nails when he needs to be, and he does not take any nonsense from anyone, yet he has a sense of our common humanity that makes him not only someone whom you respect, but also someone who engenders a great deal of affection.”
Thompson will be leaving his post on March 18.
UW System leaders have chosen prominent business attorney Jay Rothman as the next system president.
