ALGOMA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wintry weather on Tuesday had an impact across Northeast Wisconsin, including the Lakeshore.
Wind and waves were common sights along Crescent Beach in Algoma.
“It’s interesting watching all the ice shoves, and the pier gets all built up with all the ice from the waves crashing over it,” said Lucy Klessig of Algoma.
Winter’s fury was on display. Waves were building and building before slamming near the shore. Algoma city leaders say the shoves protect the half-mile long beach.
“Fortunately, right now, we do have a decent amount of ice shoves that’s pushed up onto our beach. That kind of helps our beach erosion. And it’s breaking the waves onto that ice shove, instead of hitting our beach and taking that sand back off with it,” said Matt Murphy, Algoma City Public Works Director.
Murphy says the frozen spray is impressive.
“The waves come in and they hit these snow shoves, and they’re probably pushing up into the air, 20-30 feet. It’s actually pretty neat to watch,” he said.
But Murphy says people need to stay off the ice and enjoy the shoves from the safety of the shoreline.
“Do not go out there walking on them. With one, the water that’s coming up and splashing onto it, but number two is, you don’t know where there’s a gap in between there. Where there’s a little bit of snow maybe that’s holding, you could fall in. You’re going to fall down 10-12 feet right into the lake. You’re not on the beach. That’s actually in the water,” he said.
That’s something Klessig keeps in mind, because she says there’s still plenty of wintry weather ahead.
“It seems to get bigger every day, and kind of melts a little bit here and there, but it’s pretty steady,” she said.
