OCONTO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A woman who allegedly shot an Oconto Falls police officer pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect on Friday.
Alisha Kocken, 28, is charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and other eight counts for the Aug. 6 confrontation with Officer Nicole Blaskowski.
The so-called insanity plea means the defense is arguing Kocken could not tell right from wrong at the time of the incident. If the case goes to trial, a jury would first determine if Kocken is guilty. If so, a second phase of the trial would be held to determine if she should be responsible for the shooting due to her mental state.
A psychiatric evaluation was ordered, and will be reviewed at a May 6 hearing. No trial date has been set, according to court records.
Previously, Kocken received psychiatric treatment and was deemed competent to stand trial. That determination means she is able to understand the proceedings and assist in her own defense.
Kocken was charged after an incident where police were called to an Oconto Falls home. There was a physical confrontation between Kocken and Officer Blaskowski. At one point, Kocken allegedly grabbed Blaskowski’s gun and shot the officer in the head. She has since been released from the hospital.
