GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A tight labor market is likely to remain the way of the world in Wisconsin for the forseeable future.
Regional economist with the Wisconsin department of workforce development, Ryan Long, says the labor market has been tight since before the pandemic. He thinks it won’t change any time soon.
“I can pretty confidently say for the next 20 years or so,” said Long, “At the heart of it is a workforce quantity issue where the labor market is doing musical chairs, where there are not enough people for all of the chairs.”
According to data from the Department of Workforce Development, the labor force has decreased by 17,200 workers from December 2018 to December 2021. Which is less than 1%.
Long says low fertility rates and change in the workforce are factors.
NEW North Vice President of marketing and investor relations, Renee Torzala says a marketing campaign called More YOU in NEW is using local video testimonies to attract and retain new hires to Northeast Wisconsin.
“I think everywhere people are looking for talent, just because basic demographic and workforce changes, the workforce is shrinking. Everyone is clamoring for talent and is seeking people to fill jobs,” said Torzala.
Torzala says the campaign has already seen success.
She says NEW North will continue to work with local companies as they navigate the changing labor market.
