OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) — With thousands set to hit the ice this weekend, DNR officials are reminding sturgeon spearers to stay safe.
Lt. Chris Shea says the thickness of the ice isn’t tracked by the Department of Natural Resources, so you’ll have to check elsewhere.
“We recommend that spearers and ice anglers check with local clubs for ice conditions, ice road conditions, and also the conditions of bridges across cracks,” said Shea.
Before even stepping out on to the ice, Shea says there are things you should do.
“Carry ice picks, a throw rope, ice cleats, dress in layers, and always carry that cell phone with you,” Shea told media on Wednesday. “If possible, don’t go out alone, tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back.”
The sturgeon spearing season starts Saturday.
