GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Mothers are able to stay in the same room as their newborn babies who need intensive care at one Green Bay hospital.
Bellin opened its Family Integrated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit last month. The unit allows the hospital to provide what’s called “couplet care” with the mother and baby in the same room. Bellin believes its NICU to be the first in Wisconsin to offer couplet care.
“This state-of-the-art approach to NICU care has numerous benefits for the baby and family, including earlier bonding and breastfeeding success, increasing confidence for parents and reducing length of stay,” Deborah Fischer, Bellin Health vice president for OB/GYN and neonatology, said in a news release.
“Opening this unit when we did took on additional importance due to the most recent surge of COVID-19, as these private suites allow for improved social distancing and a reduced chance of infection for babies and families. It’s a ‘start together, stay together’ approach that will offer countless advantages for the patients we are privileged to serve.”
The new NICU has 14 private suites.
The unit also includes a family room with outdoor access during warm-weather months.
