GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – With bitter cold temperatures forecasted the next couple of days, Wisconsin Public Service is offering tips on keeping your home safe and saving money on your utility bill.
When it comes to at-home safety, WPS says to only use newer space heaters with safety features such as automatic shut-off. Space heaters should be kept at least six feet away from flammable materials and be plugged in directly into the wall, not into extension cords or power strips, according to the utility company.
Electric blankets should be turned off when not in use. They should be kept away from pets, as their teeth and claws could puncture wire insulation and cause damage, WPS says.
Homeowners should make sure carbon monoxide detectors are working properly and never use a stove or oven to heat their home. The action could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
For those looking to stay warm and save money, WPS suggests opening curtains or blinds when the sun is out to help warm the home. They should also be closed at night to help retain heat and cut down on drafts.
In addition, WPS suggests wearing an extra layer of clothing instead of turning up the thermostat. A sweater or blanket can be helpful without adding to energy use.
