OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – She may have missed it by a few weeks, but Betty White’s 100th birthday became a party for animal shelters across the country on Monday. That includes the Oshkosh Area Humane Society.
In honor of the legendary actress’ 100th birthday, fans were encouraged to donate to local animal shelters. Oshkosh Humane Society Donor Relations Coordinator Jessica Miller was stunned by the outpouring of support.
“This was absolutely incredible. I can’t wrap my head around global impact that one amazing woman had on animal welfare in just a matter of a couple of days,” Miller told WTAQ News. “Donations are still coming in, and we had an incredible response. Our doorbell was ringing nonstop…Everybody brought a gift to the door with a big smile on their face and said that it was in memory of Betty White. We’re still getting phone calls today. It’s just absolutely unbelievable how this just all came about.”
Between the hundreds and hundreds of donations brought in to OAHS on Monday, Miller ventures a guess that people gave upwards of $15,000. That kind of money can have a wide, rippling impact for animals in their shelter.
“We are helping animals that might need an expensive emergency medical care sometime. We’ve had actually several of those in the recent past,” Miller said. “A phenomenal Betty White Challenge right now, like this, is extremely timely for us because we’ve got quite a few animals right now that it have needed some expensive care. This is just beyond words…Betty White is an angel for us, really!”
If you’d like to donate, head over to the Oshkosh Area Humane Society’s website to learn how.
