GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Green Bay Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department is looking for lifeguards now, hoping not to see a repeat of last summer.
The summer of 2021 saw a lifeguard shortage, forcing them to only open two of three pools, and limiting swimmers’ options. But the department is committed to having all three open this season.
“We just didn’t have enough certified lifeguards to have all of our facilities open. We absolutely do not want that to happen again…We always start advertising our open positions for summer around this time of year, however, there is a little bit of a heavier push to get the word out ASAP,” said Recreation Supervisor, Ann Moeller. “In the middle of winter, you can have your summer job ready to go.”
Moeller says they’re waiting to hear back about who is all returning to the lifeguard staff, but that won’t stop the interview process.
“It could be anywhere in the area of 30 to 50 new lifeguards for this summer. You don’t have to be lifeguard certified to apply or interview…That lifeguard training will happen after hire,” Moeller told WTAQ News.
Those already certified will start with higher pay, however. To entice future lifeguards, the city is also offering a number of bonuses, including a $200 bonus if you work a full-time schedule.
One of the problems last year also involved people applying very late in the season.
“When I say late, I mean – June, mid-June, end of June – and that doesn’t help us get our pools ready to be open and staffed,” Moeller said.
So applying as early as this week can really help.
“That will give us time to go through that lifeguard training course, you have different dates and options to go through that class. It just gives everybody some time to figure out those details and logistics,” Moeller said.
You must be at least 15 years old to apply.
